HOW TO PLAY

08 RULES

A fast, tactical game on a smaller board. Learn the special moves before you begin.

01
The board
Five files (A–E) and seven ranks (1–7). Each side starts with a King, Queen, Rook, Bishop, Knight and five Pawns.
02
Win the King
Capture the opponent’s King to win. There is no check or checkmate. A player with no legal move loses.
03
The King
Moves one square in any direction but cannot land on an attacked square. Once per game, it may dash exactly two squares in a straight or diagonal direction if the middle square is empty. The landing square cannot be attacked.
04
Queen range
The Queen moves in straight or diagonal lines, up to four squares at a time.
05
Pawn movement
A Pawn moves one square forward, or two from its starting rank. It may also step one square sideways into an empty square. It captures diagonally forward.
06
Centre-lane capture
On the central rank (rank 4), a Pawn gains a special sideways capture against an adjacent enemy piece. Control the middle to open new tactics.
07
Rook, Bishop and Knight
The Rook moves horizontally or vertically; the Bishop moves diagonally; the Knight jumps in an L-shape. Sliding pieces cannot jump over other pieces. The Knight is the only piece that can leap.
08
Capture score and promotion
Captures earn points: Pawn 1, Knight 3, Bishop 3, Rook 5, Queen 9. Capturing the King wins; points are a tactical score, not a substitute win condition. A Pawn reaching the far rank promotes to a Queen.
